Mendiants like the Orangettes are traditionally made in French households during Christmas. Mendiants are a specialty of the South of France and one of the thirteen desserts found on Christmas Eve tables in Provence.
The colors of the dried fruit and nuts symbolize the four monastic orders and mirror the colors of their robes, hence the name of this sweet. Today, the name mendiant is used to describe food preparations that involve dried fruits and nuts.
